Energy-Efficient ‘Hives’ at Prydniprovska TPP Save 90% of Electric Energy

20 November 2018

The project on upgrading the ceiling lighting of the turbine room over four turbines was completed at DTEK Prydniprovska TPP. The new 130 hive-shaped LED fixtures consume 90% less power than old incandescent lamps. “Hives” will save 400,000 kWh, or 785,000 hryvnias, in a year. Environmental effect is the reduction of CO2 emissions by 380 tons annually.

DTEK ESCO financed and carried installation on a turnkey basis of energy-efficient lamps, twilight sensors, replacement of 2.6 km of cable systems and switchboards under an energy service contract.

“Energy service allowed the plant not to spend its money and energy on the retrofitting of lighting. New lamps provide necessary illuminance level – 200 lux, provide comfort for staff and increase industrial safety. The new lamps are durable and can serve without replacement for several years – more than 85,000 hours,” said Serhii Dehtiarenko, Director of DTEK Prydniprovska TPP.

“New LED lamps are hive-shaped because they have aluminum radiators installed. Air temperature in the TPP turbine room is high – 40–45 degrees. In order to prevent the lights from overheating, and to help the LEDs retain their properties and quality of the luminous flux longer the radiators cool them,” informed Yurii Merintsov, Head of the Electrical Department of DTEK Prydniprovska TPP.

“We were scrupulous about the project, having completely redesigned the lighting system at Prydniprovska TPP, taking into account the aspects of the enterprise’s operation and the increased requirements for industrial safety. We guaranteed the plant to save 85% of electricity, but as a result of the comprehensive approach and the successful technical solution, the savings reach 90%. We completed all the work at a height of 25 meters in 3 weeks. We are planning to implement similar projects at 3 other DTEK Energy’s thermal power plants by the end of the year,” noted Yevhen Bushma, Director of DTEK ESCO.

DTEK ESCO has already implemented more than 30 projects to retrofit lighting systems, pump units, climate systems, install frequency converters in power plants, mining enterprises, coal factories, retrofit heating systems in kindergartens and schools. Savings on projects vary from 25 to 90%. The amount of energy service contracts of DTEK ESCO has already exceeded 400 million hryvnias.
